Pumice is an essential ingredient in succulent and cactus soil mixes.
Pumice is a term for a lightweight volcanic rock. It is a solidified frothy lava, created when highly-heated, pressured molten rock is shot out from a volcano. Its light weight is due to air spaces, which are caused by fast cooling and loss of pressure.
It can be mixed with soil or use alone. It helps to aerate the soil with its irregular shape and porous nature. It can hold on to moisture then releases it slowly for the plants. It is also a beneficial top dressing to keep water from pooling on top of the soil and touching the succulent leaves.
Depending on the mine it comes from, pumice may enrich soil with 70 or more beneficial trace minerals. It doesn’t decompose, rot or blow away.

This is my first experience using pumice as an aid to succulent health. I have added it to all of my succulents ordered from Plants in Mind and it must be doing its job because my Echeveria Topsy Turvy now has two blooms coming!!

For years I have searched for pumice in Canada. I was thrilled to find Plants in Mind. The pumice is great quality. The rock sizes are perfect for substrate use as they aren't too big and there is a nice variety. Shipping was quick. I will certainly be purchasing more in the future!
